Heredity and Variation

Interactive E-book

The Heredity and VariationEnhanced E-book* explores patterns of inheritance and discusses how offspring can look similar to their parents yet still possess differences within their genetic code. These differences can sometimes affect (positively or negatively) an offspring’s ability to survive and reproduce. This e-book focuses on historical evidence for inheritance, probability and graphic representations of inheritance, the DNA molecule, the influence of genes on our traits, the process of meiosis, and mutations.

*Enhanced E-books are highly interactive, self-directed learning experiences designed to augment understanding of science content and pedagogy. These e-books include high-resolution images, animations, videos, interactive simulations, and embedded assessment.

I reviewed Heredity and Variation. I love that the Enhanced E-book contains a lot of interactive tools such as videos and simulations. These interactive tools really help with understanding the concepts. I am using the Enhanced E-book to build my content knowledge before teaching my students in third grade. I am also using the Enhanced E-book to learn what my grade level needs to learn and about the misconceptions they may have. My students are benefiting because I am more knowledgeable about the topic that I am teaching.

I liked learning with the enhanced e-book because it included quizzes as you went to be sure you understand what you are learning as you go and not just at the end. I also really enjoyed reading about the common misconceptions students might come to the table with or take from their experiences. This allows me to be prepared to explain why those thoughts are not correct. I liked watching the short video clips. I believe I am a more visual learner so seeing processes after reading about them made me understand them much better. I would love to see e-books on a lower level for children to use as a learning tool.

This is a resource that allowed me to add to my knowledge base and give me a great foundation of information to use with my students. The actual format of the text was engaging and the slide shows and quizzes added to my overall understanding. I like the format and will be exploring additional titles in this series.

This enhanced e-book presents the scientific material in an easy to understand and engaging way. The slide shows and interactives set up mock-experiments to illustrate and cement concepts. They make reading a multi-dimensional experience. Embedded 'hands-on' ideas have also given me great ideas for my classroom. I definitely recommend this book and will be buying other enhanced e-books in this series.
