The purpose of the assessment probe, in this chapter, is to elicit children’s ideas about friction. The probe is designed to find out whether students recognize that friction can act on a nonmoving object as well as on a sliding object.
I think this is an interesting question. I am reading these, but I teach older students. The level of "concept knowledge" is lower, so I sometimes struggle thinking about the question because I am overthinking compared to the audience intended. Anyhow, the teacher support materials are still fabulous (as always), definitely worth the price of the chapter.
