The purpose of the assessment probe, in this chapter, is to elicit children’s ideas about conservation of matter. The probe is designed to find out if students recognize that all the individual parts that make up an object taken together weigh the same as the whole object before it is taken apart.
Using items that students understand, snap blocks, Keeley checks student understanding of the concept of conservation of matter. If you are picking probes according to your curriculum, the probes not only demonstrate a great way to find out student thinking. They can be easily used as a springboard into a lesson for the class.
