The story in this chapter tries to set the stage for discussions and inquiry into the nature of temperature and heat and to the fact that heat exchange is the cause of what scientists call a phase change—when something goes from liquid to solid or vice versa. In essence this may be the students’ first encounter with the laws of thermodynamics. The sample chapter also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Introduction, and Index.
This particular mystery is about heat transfer. Students can easily set up a model situation to test the ideas presented in the mystery. This could easily be extended where students practice scientific argumentation as well. They can present their claim and evidence that supports their claim.
