Archive: Conceptual Flow: Bridging the Gap between Standards, Instructional Materials and Student Learning, May 17, 2012

Web Seminar Archive Digital resources are stored online in your NSTA Library.

This Web Seminar took place on May 17, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The presenter was Kathy DiRanna, Statewide Director for the K-12 Alliance. In this Seminar, Ms. DiRanna explained how to use conceptual flow to identify what students need to learn, determine appropriate instructional strategies, and conduct effective assessments of students’ understanding.

In this program, Ms. DiRanna introduced conceptual flow by asking participants to think about the differences between facts and concepts. She demonstrated how to collaboratively develop a conceptual flow by asking seminar attendees to respond to a brief writing prompt in the chat, then showed an example of a conceptual flow constructed with various sized sticky notes. Ms. DiRanna further described the methods for creating and applying conceptual flow in the classroom by engaging participants in exercises using the web seminar interactive tools. Ms. DiRanna also discussed how conceptual flow can help teachers integrate the Common Core Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards into their lessons.

Fifty-eight (58) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Excellent presentation on how to integrate NGSS, Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts Literacy and 21st Century Skills through Conceptual Flow. Kathy DiRanna takes participants through observations of ice in cup. through three frameworks of NGSS. Included in this web seminar is rigor/relevancy framework to show how this gap is bridged to develop high rigor and relevance for student learning. Well worth viewing and downloading web seminar collection resources.
