Science of Food Safety: Grades K-4


SciGuides are a collection of thematically aligned lesson plans, simulations, and web-based resources for teachers to use with their students centered on standards-aligned science concepts. This SciGuide was co-developed between FDA and NSTA.

Have you ever been at a faculty meeting when all of a sudden you became ill to your stomach? Have you ever had a “24 hour flu?” Was it really a flu caused by a virus or was it something else? Could it have been food poisoning?

Loved this Sci Guide more than I initially thought I would. I was able to focus on teaching the 4 C's with the help of the lesson plan and vignettes that are clearly written out step by step in the Sci Guide. Used the songs provided from My students enjoyed having fun songs that I paired hand and body motions to. There were other songs that I was able to incorporate into a piece of my assessment for the learning that I tied into my health standards.

This was a very informative Sci Guide. I really liked the lessons and ideas, especially the ones on Bacteria, Taking Care of Farm Animals, the 4 C's, and handwashing. I currently teach Kindergarten and I am definitely going to be able to adapt many of the lessons to fit the needs of my students. I really like the lesson about taking care of farm animals. It talked about how to properly care for and feed farm animals, especially cows. Cows are important for giving us meat and milk. I also thought that the handwashing lessons were very appropriate for all grade levels. This sci guide is very informative and a must read for every educator!

I found the resources in this SciGuide to be very useful in teaching a lesson on Food Safety to a class of second graders. It is nice to have so many resources for food safety in one place, especially since there is so much out there on the Internet. There are great sites for teachers as well as for students. The themes I was able to use were Understanding Bacteria and Retail and Home. There are many links from these themes to teach about bacteria, hand washing, and the four core principles of food safety (clean, separate, cook, chill). Students enjoyed using the interactive games such as the Food Safety Web Wheel ( and Food Detective Fight BAC! ( Another fun resource is a site for Food Safety Music ( where you can download a power point of the words for students to follow along as the song is played. One thing I would liked to have seen is better student work samples with more writing. Overall, this is an excellent resource.
